Time is a created thing

February 08, 2025 by The Stoic CPA

“Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time’ is to say ‘I don’t want to.” Lao Tzu

Generally speaking, human action reflects priorities. We do what we want to. That is one of the wonderful things that separates us from woodland creatures who act on instinct.

That means we have significant opportunity to bring positive change to our world and the World at large.

The next time you tell your loved one you don’t have time to do something important to them or to you, replace “I don’t have time” with “I don’t want to.” Be honest, admit it.

You say: Honey, I don’t have time to go on a walk with you because I have to work.

You mean: Honey, I don’t want to go on a walk with you because right now my work is more important. Its not really more important than you, but I’m more insecure about my standing at work than I am in my standing with you. Therefore, work is more important.

See how that works? Try it.

The First Step Towards Getting Somewhere

January 20, 2025 by The Stoic CPA

"The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are." - J.P. Morgan

When J.P. Morgan said, "The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are," he wasn't just talking about physical movement—he was speaking to that universal human moment when we look around and think, "Something's got to change."

Let's be honest – staying put is incredibly seductive. It's like wearing your favorite old sweater: it might have holes, it might not look great anymore, but boy, is it comfortable. We cling to predictability like a security blanket, even when it's smothering our potential.

Here's the thing about making changes: it's supposed to feel uncomfortable. If you're completely comfortable while trying to transform your life, you're probably doing it wrong. It's like going to the gym – if you're not feeling any strain, you're probably just lounging on the equipment scrolling through Instagram.

Our brains excel at creating worst-case scenarios. "What if I fail?" But here's a radical thought: What if staying put is actually the riskier choice?

Morgan didn't say you had to have the whole journey mapped out. He just said you had to decide not to stay where you are. Sometimes that decision is enough to set everything else in motion.

Getting Your Priorities Straight

Getting Your Priorities Straight: A No-BS Guide for Entrepreneurs

Let's be real - as an entrepreneur, you're probably drowning in to-do lists, "urgent" emails, and about a million different priorities competing for your attention. Been there, done that. Here's how to cut through the noise and focus on what actually matters.

First Things First: What's Actually a Priority?

Before we dive into systems and strategies, let's talk about what makes something a true priority. Ask yourself three questions:

  • Will this move the needle for my business in the long run?

  • Can I actually make this happen with what I've got right now?

  • Is this the right time to tackle this?

If you're not nodding "yes" to at least two of these, it's probably not a real priority.

The Priority Pyramid: Your New Best Friend

Think of your priorities like a pyramid of champagne glasses at a wedding (stay with me here). The top ones need the bottom ones to work:

Level 1: The "Keep the Lights On" Stuff

This is the non-negotiable stuff that keeps your business alive:

  • Getting and keeping customers (because hey, you need revenue)

  • Making sure you've got cash in the bank

  • Delivering your product/service without dropping the ball

  • Keeping your key partners happy

Level 2: The "Growth Engine" Stuff

These priorities help you scale without everything falling apart:

  • Building your dream team (or at least a team that works)

  • Making your processes less of a mess

  • Planning how to take over new markets

  • Figuring out what products/services to launch next

Level 3: The "Future You Will Thank You" Stuff

Important? Yes. Hair-on-fire urgent? Nope:

  • Making your brand look awesome

  • Playing around with new ideas and innovations

  • Checking out potential new markets

  • Building relationships that might pay off later

Making This Actually Work

The Monday Morning Reality Check

Grab a coffee and spend 30 minutes asking yourself:

  • What actually worked last week?

  • What needs to change based on what's happening now?

  • Are my priorities still making sense, or am I chasing squirrels?

The 40/40/20 Rule

Split your week like this:

  • 40% on keeping the lights on

  • 40% on growth stuff

  • 20% on future-focused work

And yes, some weeks will be a mess. That's okay - just try to get back to this split when you can.

Watch Out For These Priority Killers

The "Everything's On Fire" Trap

  • Just because something's urgent doesn't mean it's important. Next time something "urgent" pops up, ask yourself: "Will I even remember this happened in three months?"

The "Ooh, Shiny!" Syndrome

  • New ideas are great, but they're also dangerous. Before you chase that exciting new opportunity, make sure your basic stuff is solid first.

The "Perfect Plan" Paralysis

  • Don't spend forever trying to create the perfect priority system. Start somewhere, anywhere, and adjust as you go.

Keeping Your Eye on the Prize

Daily Priority Check

  • Start each day by writing down your top three "must-dos." Not your wish list - just the three things that absolutely need to happen.

Talk About It

  • Make sure your team knows what matters and why. You don't need formal meetings - just keep everyone in the loop about what's priority number one.

Track Your Progress

  • Keep it simple. A basic spreadsheet or even a notebook works fine. Just make sure you're actually moving forward on the important stuff.

Rolling with the Punches

Markets change. Customers change. Your priorities should too. Every month or so, step back and check:

  • Has the market shifted in a way that changes your priorities?

  • Are there new opportunities that align with what you're already doing?

  • Could you move some resources around to focus on bigger wins?

Tech That Actually Helps

Don't go crazy with apps and tools. You really just need:

  • Something to manage projects (even Trello works fine)

  • A shared calendar so people know what's up

  • A place to write stuff down so you don't forget

The Bottom Line

Here's the truth: You're never going to get everything done, and that's okay. The goal isn't to be perfect - it's to focus on the stuff that actually moves your business forward.

Remember: You don't need to nail every priority perfectly. Just nail the ones that really matter for your business's growth. The rest? It'll work itself out.

P.S. If all of this feels overwhelming, just start with one thing: Write down your top three priorities for tomorrow. That's it. Start there, and build from there.
